If cooling of the produce is required and/or if the crates are stacked more than three high, the solid bottom restricts the heat from the crate underneath rising into the crate above.

Recommended for handpicked fruit, as the solid bottom restricts juice from the fruit leaking from the base of the crate while the vented sides allow for airflow.
